Beer Treatment for Hair

This year on the WearHouse District, the month of February is all about letting out our inner country boy or girl. One of the most well known hair treatment in the south is rinsing your hair with beer. Cowboys and southern belles alike have used this trick for centuries to repair damaged hair and make their locks lively and shiny.

But, does it actually work?

Yes! It works amazingly. The protein from the hops and the sugar inside the beer work together and make hair look its best.

This treatment is very simple and it is sure to save you lots of money since most professional hair treatments can be costly. And, any beer will do. There’s no need to buy expensive brands to rinse your hair with. Just simply choose a lager or ale (because of the high amount of hops) from a convenience store or liquor store.

All you have to do is open the bottle or can and let it sit for an hour or two. You want the beer to go completely flat before pouring it onto your head. Shampoo your head, rinse and then apply the beer scalp to tip. Gently massage the beer in your hair and let it sit for at least two minutes. After, rinse with cool water. We recommend apply your usually condition after to help neutralize the beer scent – which can be rather strong. Towel dry, and style as usually.

Now your hair should be extremely bouncy, full, and vibrant! Just in time to head out to a barnyard party for some square dancing! Yeehaw!

Interview: Katherine Bollinger of Frou Frou Sue Sue

Some people may be surprised to find so many creative people in the south, but just an hour’s drive south of New Orleans is the small town of Lockport, home of Katherine Bollinger, the woman behind Frou Frou Sue Sue.

Bollinger is a master of making unique, hand-made accessories. Her Line Frou Frou Sue Sue is one of the most creative I have ever seen in the south. I own several of her pieces and I often wear them to add some extra fun to my outfits when I go out to special events. My two favorite pieces would have to be the multicolored zipper necklace and resin measuring tape bracelet. They are both one-of-a-kind pieces.

I was lucky enough to interview Bollinger this month and
get to know more about her and her work. Her creative abilities range from patchwork to making handbags to jewelry designing. She was even published in "Pretty in Patchwork" by Lark Publishing for the memory quilt she made out of vintage fabrics from her mother.

"I've never been a regular diamond girl at all. Old Pearls, yes!"

What does a usual day consist of for you?
Katherine Bollinger: Well, I’m a morning person so I get up early and like to be in my studio as soon as everyone in the house is gone. If I don’t have a specific order I play with my fabrics or jewelry supplies or paper. I like to knit or crochet in the evenings in front of the television. If I don’t do something creative for a few days, I get really antsy.

When and why did you start designing jewelry?
KB: I've been making jewelry for quite a few years now. At first I bought beads and did basic bracelets and necklaces. Then I fell in love with the mixed media pieces that included old jewelry parts. Since I’ve always loved old jewelry and really different designs, it just seemed the way to go. I’ve never been a regular diamond girl at all. Old pearls, yes!

What are some of your inspirations when creating your accessories?
KB: It really takes me a while to decide which direction to go in. Sometimes it’s the color of a buckle or button (I love color blocked items of any kind), maybe an old piece of earring or a certain collection of old fabrics. When blogs first became popular I went crazy looking at pictures for inspiration. Now, it’s Pinterest. I also like to try new and different products. Resin jewelry is my latest venture.

Why did you choose a “vintage” look for your designs?
KB: I’ve always collected and loved antiques. The house I live in is over 100 years old. Besides, now I’m considered vintage too!

Are all your pieces made with real vintage materials?
KB: Most of the time. I have so much from my mom but love to buy old jewelry pieces, sewing paraphernalia, game pieces, and other little “treasures”. My mom kept everything too so the apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree.

How do you choose the materials you use?
KB: It may sound corny but it really has to speak to me and tell me it belongs together.

Is there a certain statement you wanted to make with your designs?
KB: Be courageous enough to wear something unique! And, recycling is always a great thing.

Picking the Right Plus One

A person’s most important accessory is their plus one at any event.
We all know it is true no matter how much we try to deny it. So it is essential that when you enter a room with your date for the night, that you are proud and need to be seen with this person.

But how do you know if this person is the right fashion statement for you?
There are a few steps to take to make sure you are sporting the right plus one. First of all, at all times you are representing yourself, so you must decide the way you want to be perceived. So now that you have that image, what kind of person goes best with the whole image?

Now here is the real rule
But first let me explain the core principle: The one to ten rating scale. Give yourself a number, and remember it cannot vary day by day. 1-3 below average, 4-5 is average, 6 and above is above average, and it is close to impossible to be a 10 basically. Feel free to practice by looking around and just rating everyone. And remember that this little scale is rating every single person, so a wide range of people and looks can have the same number. With a little practice you will be an expert at rating. This may sound terrible and judgmental, but you will have to trust me on this. You can go one below or one above or someone on the same number. For example, if you decide you are a 7 you can only date a 6, 7, or 8. Never ever settle for less, but never go any higher because that will not be a good statement. So basically once you know where you stand and who you are you can pick a suitable plus one.

Let me explain why this process is essential.
Having the right accessory can make a whole outfit come together. Well, having that right plus one will make your whole image come together at any event, and beyond what any outfit can do. It is important to think the person you are with is attractive. However, if you are a 5 and you bring in a 9 or 10, well think about it. You have seen it before and what did you think? Exactly. It will look like you brought your cousin, you are paying that person, or someone is getting used. It won't give you a favorable image. You also want to make sure that you can be true to yourself by never settling for less than what you deserve. How terrible it would feel if the other person was settling for you? Ew. Don’t do that to someone; it isn’t nice. You should be proud to flaunt your most important accessory. Don’t forget it.

Dressing like a gentleman is not as easy as it looks, some might say. We live in a day and age where fashionable standards are being lowered and less and less men care about what they look like. In my opinion, it’s complete travesty.

It is perfectly fine to hop on the bandwagon of the latest trends and clothing styles, such as the never-dying “geek chic” fad and the “hipster” looks. Everyone does it, because we’re nothing but human. But I want to push the envelope by reverting back to a simpler time in history where the hues of Hollywood were the expectation, and men across the world had some class. Therefore, I challenge the men today to a fashion showdown; will there ever be a time where we travel back to simpler days and show what we’re truly made of? I believe there is hope for us all.

Let us begin this transformation easily by talking about pocket squares. No, I am not talking about pocket protectors, but about a simple, eye-catching extravaganza that will make you look like you stepped right out of a silent movie. According to Brooks Brothers, there are four ways to wear a square. There is the puffed fold, square-ended fold, triangle fold, and lastly the multi-pointed fold. The second way to transform your look from drab to fab is by picking up a box or two of personalized handkerchiefs. As I was holiday shopping, I decided to buy a little happy for myself along the way; I came across a 3-pack of “J” handkerchiefs for around $5.00. What a small price to pay for such a vintage look. Do not think of handkerchiefs as something your grandmother would keep in her purse in case of an emergency. Hankies are great accessories that have a dual purpose; they’re fashionable at any age plus they can come in handy during the cold winter months.

Ah, now we shall work our way to cufflinks. To me, cufflinks are another subtle way to let your personality shine through without revealing too much. Think of cufflinks as paying homage to yourself and an homage to the past. Cufflinks are classy buttons and come in all shapes and sizes; there are themed links, initial and number links, links with stones, damascene links, and much, much more … basically, the possibilities are endless! To tell you the truth, I was never truly into pocket watches until recently; my co-workers and I had a small gathering recently and we exchanged gifts. One wonderful gift I received was a vintage pocket watch; to say I was sold from that moment on is an understatement! Pocket watches just ooze with class and must be worn at specific times. If you ask for one as a gift or receive one in due time, it is best to wear the watch with a vest.

Unique walking canes will turn you into a distinguished gentleman in no time. Be brave and buy yourself something along the lines of an ivory walking stick. According to M. S. Rau Antiques, walking canes come in various packages. You have the painter’s cane, the blown glass cane, the mathematician’s cane, and the blue enamel perfume cane, just to name a few. If you are just at the beginning of showing your true fashion sense, perhaps you can purchase a more plain cane and eventually work your way up to a cane of distinction!

Bowties are yet another simple way to add style to your fashion repertoire. The bowtie does not necessarily have to fit into the category of “geek sheek;” think of it as an old friend from the prohibition era working its way into your wardrobe. The easy way out would be to purchase a pre-made tie, but it takes a real man to buy a flaccid strip of cloth and turn it into a masterpiece of the neck.

I recently had the privilege of interviewing Joseph A. Federico the editor-in-chief of Debonair Magazine.

Writing has been Federico’s calling ever since he was in grade school. He described how he would edit his classmate’s work in his school’s computer lab out loud. “That would get me into such trouble,” he said. One of his latest major accomplishments outside of Debonair has been publishing his first book, Images of America: Galloway Township by Arcadia Publishing. Now, Federico is working his dream job as editor-in-chief of Debonair.

Debonair was founded in 2005 by Eddie Hertzman of Hertzman Media Group. Hertzman said he had decided to create Debonair because he wanted a resource for guys that wanted to be stylish and look like guys in the magazines but couldn’t afford the lavish attire. Debonair targets young men who live in an urban area. When I asked about the certain type of guys that the magazine is designed for, Hertzman answered, “The target reader is the young professional who has aspiration. He cares about details, fashion, lifestyle and good food. Health and appearance are also at the top of his list. The man who aspires to be debonair wants the finer things in life and is working toward them. What man doesn’t need a little boost from time to time, to help point him in the right direction? That’s what we’re about.”

When Federico is working on articles and trying to reach this target audience for Debonair, he draws inspiration from leading men of Hollywood, like George Clooney or Brad Pitt. “With every article I write, I ask myself ‘What would George or Brad do?’ and try to translate that to the younger generations of men out there and to what I think would interest them,” said Federico.

One can certainly describe Debonair Magazine as stylish. But, the word style can have so many meanings. Each person has their own style and their own meaning of the word. Federico shared with me what style means to him. He said, “To me, style encompasses the mind, body, and the soul. It honestly is a state of being that translates into every day function.”

When it comes to his personal style, Federico said his favorite look this past fall season was without a doubt the cardigan, and he also enjoyed seeing the bow-tie make a comeback. He also said he is very much looking forward to nautical looks and the muted colors that will be appearing this spring. “It’s going to be a good spring and summer 2012 for men across the nation!” Federico said.

As for Debonair in 2012, Federico says they have a lot to offer in the New Year. Men’s jewelry is going to be a point of interest for the magazine, and they are also going to really focus on the “lifestyle” angle as well. Also, we can all look forward to the “Debonair Like Me” series, in which the magazine features a young man they think fits the standards of being a true debonair. “We have lots of surprises in store for our readers.”

We here at the WearHouse District are huge supporters of independent designers and boutique owners.
They are usually the key to a unique wardrobe, and are a huge inspiration for all fashion fans. This is very true for boutique owner Angie Hebert and local designers like Connie Chiasson.

This past week Veronica and I were invited to a sale at a boutique about 30 miles from New Orleans, just in time to wrap up some holiday shopping. Our experience at the sale was fantastic. When we arrived we were greeted by Angie Hebert, the boutiques owner and local jewelry designer, Connie Chiasson and we were offered holiday refreshments like eggnog and cookies as we shopped.It was definitely a very relaxed setting and all the items at the boutique were very beautiful. As were the prices. For that night, the whole store was marked down 15%.

Angie Hebert's boutique Salon 248 is located in a small suburban area in Raceland, LA and is actually an extension to her home. Angie is a cosmetologist who has been styling hair for about 30 years. In the last 10 years she has been working in her salon attached to her house. About two years ago Hebert began selling purses in her salon. She said it was during a period when there was a major animal print trend for purses in her town, so she stocked up on some purses and sold them to her clients. "With all the animal print in my salon I felt like I was going to be attacked," Hebert said jokingly during our interview. After the purses, Hebert slowly expanded her inventory. Now, she has a whole boutique full of unique jewelry and accessories.

Salon 248 houses some very unique pieces. Hebert carries both store-bought items and handmade pieces from local designers like Connie Chiasson, whose jewelry line Creations by Connie is full of elegant one of a kind pieces. Chiasson also sells her jewelry at her house in Lockport, LA. And, she often holds sales throughout the year where guests shop for brilliant jewelry and gifts that she displays in her home.

I was very impressed and inspired by Angie Hebert and Connie Chiasson. Starting a jewelry brand and opening a stylish boutique are not easy tasks. They were both able to find very original ways to do so. And, Veronica and I are really looking forward to our next visit so we can stock up on more amazing accessories.

Hair Styles for the New Year

The hot hairstyle trend we will see everywhere in 2012 is long hair. For both men and women, longer hairstyles are making a huge comeback.

Once upon a time, longer hair on men was seen as alternative or grungy, but in the new year we will see men taking the time to style their long locks and staying away from the surfer look. With the right cut, some conditioning, combing, and basic styling routines men can have a very chic look even with longer hair.

Women will also be taking the long route when it comes to their hair styling in the new year. The big trend will most certainly be straight, shiny length with either classic or parted bangs. Sweeping your bangs to one side can also be a fun alternative since doing so adds a little drama to a simple hairstyle.

To stay on trend with your hair growth. Make sure you take care of your hair by taking regular vitamins and eating healthy. Fatty foods and sugars can affect hair growth, as well as smoking and excessive alcohol intake. Try to get exercise regularly and get lots of sleep, because a healthy body leads to healthy hair.

Ways to Wear a Scarf

Everyone loves scarves! They are so stylish and so practical. A warm, knitted scarf can be a very simple way to make many outfits winter appropriate. Or, you can use a fine silk scarf to dress up a simple ensemble. Possibilities are endless.

Not only are there many types of scarves, there are also many ways to wear scarves. For instance, many people like to fold their scarf in half and loop the ends around their neck and through the middle of the two halves. This is a very casual way to wear a scarf but it stays nice and tight and keeps you very toasty on cold days. Another way to wear a scarf, if warmth is your goal, is by wrapping the scarf around your neck as many times as you can and then tucking the very ends of it underneath itself or in your outerwear.

If your scarf is for style, a BoHo chic look is always fun. Simply wrap the scarf around your neck once and stretch the fabric a bit in the front and back so it stays a bit loose while both ends are in front. The draping of the fabric is a great way to add texture to an outfit. Also, the classic way of wearing a scarf with one end over your shoulder will always be one of the most stylish alternatives.

Experiment and try fun new ways to wear your scarf. So you can stay warm and stylish this winter.

A Night with Jordy Marilyn

Last weekend I traveled to Baton Rouge, LA for a Lingerie Fashion Show that Benefited CARP (Capital Area Re-entry Program) in the fight against HIV. The event was held at Club Theory in the downtown area of Baton Rouge and the show featured work from Scarlett+Atticus, White rabbit and one of the most provocative designers in the region, Jordy Marilyn of Marilyn Manor.

As my friend and I walked into Club Theory, I instantly noticed how fun a lot people were dressed. This was a sure sign that Jordy Marilyn was in the building. If there is anything that Jordy Marilyn does better than designing outrageous clothing it is inspiring people to express themselves and push the boundaries of what most humans consider normal.

Jordy Marilyn is spotted dressed in an over-sized red, fluffy top and a pair of ripped stockings, mingling with all the attendees. The director of the show and friend of Marilyn, Rachel Shipman, had asked him to participate. “I had been longing to be a part of a fashion show for almost two years now, I had grown so much since my first showcase,” Jordy Marilyn said. “It was the perfect timing too; coming in conjunction with the performance art pieces I did at a local gay club in Baton Rouge.”

Preparing for the show, Marilyn spent countless days and sleepless nights hard at work. “My inspiration comes to me organically, I spend countless hours researching, dreaming, listening to music, watching different films, etc.,” said Jordy Marilyn. He then takes what he has gathered through this process of inspiration and collaborates with his close friends and other artists. After, he focuses all his attention on constructing, designing, and sewing for his life.

Jordy Marilyn expressed that this particular show was inspired by sex and the similarities he finds in sex and horror films. When he was creating the concept behind the show, Jordy Marilyn thought back to when he was spending a lot of time with a guy who had long hair, tattoos, and an addiction to rock-and-roll and horror films. “He was so beautiful and I was drowned in the dream of being a man's Nancy, because he was my Sid vicious. He and I would get together occasionally for food, champagne, cigarettes, sex, and horror films. So when I thought of the concept for this collection I remembered that time in my life and how scary it was.”

“I find horror films to be quite sexy, almost the same as porn; but I find the act of sex to be rather scary because of the growing number of HIV/AIDS causes rising in the young generation. The disease is symbolic of a serial murderer that cannot be stopped by the police, and is much faster paced that we can keep up with. So much like a horror film, we must be careful, and handle sex with precaution. Can you really trust that guy or girl you're getting into bed with; do we know that he's broke with no money? Or that he has demonic ways? Is all of that a turn on? It's all about getting to know the guy before you take off that denim.”

As the lights go up and the models prepare to walk, everyone gathers around the raised runway. Jordy Marilyn’s designs show last after the first two designers. His collection opened with models sporting muzzles and “greeting” the crowd with signs stating controversial phrases like “Pig + Brain Flavored Condomz… Select one and Die,” and “Hey kids! You like horror? Sex? Freaks? Blood?...well Cum Inside." Marilyn said, “The front of the signs said something to sort of the provoke the crowd ‘into bed with me’ if you will. The back of the sign would say something that sort of made you question 'what did I get myself into?'. The signs were meant to be vulgar and uncensored, much like the truth of unprotected sex is.”

Jordy Marilyn had a very clear message with this show: Be careful. “Don't close your eyes to this disease. To the young generation especially, we're all so young still and have our whole lives ahead of us.” Jordy Marilyn expressed that Marilyn Manor is currently his only boyfriend, but her has learned to appreciate men for more than just their bodies. He wants us to be able to understand and share this sentiment.

Jordy Marilyn sees the Lingerie Soiree fashion show as the cultural genesis for Marilyn Manor. Most people would take time to rest after such a big show, but Marilyn thinks otherwise. He spent the entire day after the showcase creating the blueprint of what is next for Marilyn Manor. “I started researching different literature to begin writing the manifesto for Marilyn Manor in collaboration with my best friend Lester Patin, who is an amazing writer. I'm such a fan of how powerful, humorous, lighthearted and yet soul baring all of his work is. So, I thought it would make sense to work with him on it.”

Marilyn also just booked a photo shoot to begin working on his portfolio and he is already planning his next fashion show. “They will only get grander, more tasteless, and more ridiculous as time goes on; the one thing that will be constant is fearless fashion.”

Interview: Diva Dar Dar

Terin, the designer behind the Diva Dar Dar label is a former model from Baton Rouge, LA who has been designing since 2001.

“I couldn't find outfits and accessories that were different for my shoots so I used my talents and creativity to make jewelry and outfits,” Terin said.

Terin is self taught and learned a lot of her designing skills from her mother and aunt. “So it's in my blood! I bleed creativity!”

The brand name Diva Dar Dar is a combination of Terin’s Indian heritage and background and her Diva attitude. She likes to think of Diva Dar Dar as her alter ego.

What are some of your inspirations for your designs?

All genres of music, the beats and vibe I get from listening give me creative ideas, and I can visualize a piece of jewelry or clothing that would describe that particular mood. How would you describe your line's style?

One of a kind, wild, sweet, funky, bold, sexy, trendy and just off the wall creativity!

Describe what type of girl you feel your designs speak to.

A true fashionista with divatude! A girl who loves to be different and stand out in a crowd, a girl who drives full speed in her own lane of fashion! A girl who can pull off any fashion statement, a girl who sets the fashion trends and not afraid of being different!

One of the things that makes you stand out are the materials you use in your designs. What are some of your favorite materials to work with?

Anything I can get my hands on and use in a unique creative way for accessories. Everything: Paper, wood, leather, metal, fabric, paint, etc...

What were some of the reasons why you decided to start using these materials for your jewelry?

I live for creativity, so I like to use materials people wouldn't think of using for accessories. I like to turn nothing into something out the box… with a touch of divatude! Something nobody would have!

Any future plans, line expansions, or upcoming events?

I’m planning a photo shoot and videos of my line. And, I’m starting to design little girls clothing and accessories and also shoe designs.

Product Review: Sesame Seed Oil

Did you know that those little sesame seeds that most people attempt to pick off of their hamburger buns are actually a great beauty secret?

The oil extracted from sesame seeds are rich in omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 fatty acids as well as some very powerful antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. These ingredients all make sesame seed oil very beneficial to our hair and skin.

Sesame seed oil acts as an antibacterial so many people use it to treat oral infections or sore throats, but these antibacterial properties can also clear up acne. And, the minerals in the oil are a godsend for anyone that suffers from chronic dandruff or other scalp conditions. It can also be used to help with minor injuries like bruises, dry skin or cuts. The vitamins and antioxidants help the healing process and prevent scarring.

In just one use I was able to see a difference in my skin and hair! I took roughly three caps full of the oil and warmed it in the microwave for a few seconds. I dripped the oil on to my hair from roots to tip by parting my hair and allowing it to reach my scalp. After applying it to my whole head I waited only around 15 minutes and washed it out. Instantly my hair seemed fuller, shinier, and extremely soft. There was no oily residue left over. It was very easy to rinse out unlike coconut oil or castor oil, and my dry scalp was non-existent.

I also applied a very small amount to a cut on my arm and amount a cap full on my face. I was very nervous applying oil to my face, because just the day before I started to back out and I did not want more clogged pores. But, it worked amazingly! Just a 10-15 minute wait before rinsing my face and arm and I could already notice a difference. My skin was very soft to the touch and even looked a bit brighter. The next morning I woke up to a completely clear face and the cut decreased majorly in size and redness.

I definitely recommend using sesame seed oil for skin and hair benefits! You can find organic sesame seed oil at most health food stores – where it usually runs about $15-20 for a standard jar.

New Orleans Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2012

When it comes to Spring 2012 trends, there will most likely be a return of color blocking and busy prints. But, the major trends will be metallics, pale hues, and futuristic styles. These trends were certainly represented at NOLAFW.

By drawing inspiration from digital communication and water - two things that connect all people, Amanda deLeon took the futuristic and metallic trend to a new level.

We love the leather work seen in her fall collection. This season our love for Amanda deLeon’s designs grew even greater with the use of sequins and tassels. This collection proved her range. She was able to bring her edgy style and merge it flawlessly with summer and spring colors, materials, and structures. She continues to show architecture in her work. Some pieces you wonder how did she even make that? She is amazing at working with her materials.

Her explanation of her collection was beautiful, so it is easy to see she views her work as art. Fashion is art, and Fashion is expression. We communicate something about who we are through fashion, and deLeon clearly understands this.

Fashion makes the world smaller, too. This is actually a huge part of The WearHouse District’s philosophy. We feel like we may have something in common with her because it’s possible we share the same beliefs. And, the fact that her collection communicated this perfectly is something we most certainly appreciate.

Her use of sequin worked and gave her looks amazing fluid motion like the flow of water by using the sequins with long, beautiful tassels. And, there were deep, pure hues of aqua and blue throughout the collection. Accents of gold and other metallics as well as the organza cut-outs on the back of her dresses respectively gave tribute to screens, digital devices and electric wiring.

[Matthew Arthur's fun, club-girl looks]

Matthew Arthur's geometric shapes and pointed silhouettes also respected the futuristic trend quite well. He also featured awesome use of metallics and pale hues.

Something that is rare, especially with self-taught designers, is finding someone that can execute unique, interesting menswear that is also very well produced. Matthew Arthur not only accomplished this, but blew all other streetwear collections out of the water.

His color pallet, exciting prints, and brave use of mesh took menswear into a whole new realm that has only been seen in collections from designers like Marc Jacobs. The length, cut and fit of the mens’s shorts was perfect. The sailor hats and subtle maritime theme was fun.

His women’s streetwear was young, and lively. His pointed, metallic skirts and lace tops were so exciting and fun. The geometric pieces shown on the runway had the right amount of uniqueness and wearability. His work is undeniably good. He took risks and they were awesome.

Rogersliu attempted the futuristic trend. The collection had strong looks, but lacked when it came to precision. Many pieces were still a bit rough around the edges.

Many tops were sheer and rather revealing. All of their models had pasties covering their nipples. But, the one that does not has an automatic wardrobe malfunction. This may seem that if you plan on wearing any of our clothes from this collection you have to wear something on your nipple because it will pop out. Most likely buyers will question the pieces’ ability to be worn.

Rogersliu showed many pieces with splatter paint effects and had dyed the bottoms of their long, white dresses with the bright colors seen throughout the collection. This was fun and different, but was not executed properly. These details made some garments look sloppy, and may make reproduction harder.

This collection looked as if they had half of the collection ready, and the day before they producers told them they must have a whole collection, and they did not make it work. Half of the collection looked like they bought sheets and v-neck shirts, splattered paint, and glued on the pieces. The most upsetting thing about this collection is if you look at their previous work it is absolutely beautiful. Where was that skill for this collection?

Ashlie Ming’s Blackout collection did not follow too many trends, but for a debut show, this was not too bad. This collection was very wearable. Bright, electric colors and exposed skin gave the collection a warm summer feel. But, the looks also had a bold, modern edge when it came to the silhouettes shown.

Ming took a risk using light-weight material like silks and cottons for her timeless silhouettes, but she pulled it off with amazing use of ties and cinching.

It was also risky because she focused on black for spring and summer, but it was a risk worth taking.

The contrast between the bright greens and blacks in the looks shown definitely added to the collections boldness. The pieces were simple, yet sexy. These details are what will make the pieces in this collection easily transfer from day to night, which seems to be the designer’s ultimate goal for this season’s collection.

Varela and Brooks Spring collection was soft, flowy, natural, and definitely used the pale hue trend. The looks showed off their attention to detail through the pleating on their long dresses and the accents of horizontal pleating featured on the front and backs of their tops. Their pleating work was really amazing.

The cut-outs on the arms of their pieces were a great detail for a spring collection. This gave the looks a feminine feel, and still kept it very sophisticated. This is probably a good thing for them because we feel they are trying to sell to more of a sophisticated group of New Orleans woman.

We were very disappointed to see the same light blue and pink, coral-reef-like print that was in their last collection. It certainly works much better in a Spring/Summer collection, but we were already bored with it. The designers must be trying to make this there signature print, which is always a huge risk to take unless the design’s colors can be manipulated easily and transfer to different materials to fit different seasons and trends.

Annie Griffin’s collection could possibly be considered one of the most underrated collections. There was not much hype about it, yet she surprised us. Her use of prints was amazing. Each print was beautiful. The back of the her dresses were fantastic. The exposed zippers added a masculine, modern feel to very girly-styled dresses. It was the little details in each piece that made the collection pretty great.

Jolie and Elizabeth’s collection was possible the most overrated. It was very safe, but this is not a surprise. The designers always stay pretty safe. They certainly took full advantage of the pale color trend because it took up most of their pallet. Overall, the collection was just too much of the same looks, materials, and colors. They may have even shown the same dress multiple times.

This collection is very wearable for Louisiana residents because it is very southern belle. But, we were not impressed with the fit or the material. The amount of seersucker shown was a little over the top. And, this is the second season in a row that they had models walk in poorly fitted clothing. Some pieces looked liked track shorts… maybe they were track shorts.

We don’t know if we agree with what they do, but people love them. The hype for this show was insane.

Event Review: Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2012 (New Orleans)

Unfortunately, New Orleans Fashion Week took some steps backwards this season. Last March we were blown away at the professionalism and talent that I witnessed at Fashion Week. This season, we still adore everyone that was a part of the production, but there were certain instances that should not have happened.

New Orleans Fashion Week's runway shows were held in the Patrick Taylor Library of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art by the NOLA Fashion Council.

The parking was a disaster; there was no valet. Crossing the street with no crosswalk provided three nights of terror in a row. But, we guess we won’t hold that against them.

The doors opened at 6:30 every night; the check-in was easy. The lounge area was nice. They provided an open bar and excellent coffee services. On the second day, there were smoothies from Smoothie King given out in the lounge, which we enjoyed very much, but not on the third day. However, my only problem was last season was catered instead of the open bar, which we actually preferred. The catering seemed more fitting for the event. Whereas an open bar just makes the event seem less serious, and more geared towards entertainment. It seemed like a downgrade.

The layout of the show was also different from last season. It was a short, straight runway instead of the long, rectangle-shaped runway from last season. The shorter distance may have made it easier for the designers to display larger collections, instead of just 20 looks.

Sure, the new straight runway is more traditional, but it did not work for the venue. Straight runways are always a “don’t” if the platform is not raised. The rectangle-shaped runway should have made a return, and so should have the projections on the back wall of the runway listing the label or designer’s name during the shows. It is very important to have this for both photographers taking pictures of the looks and the media in the audience taking notes.

This new layout made it difficult to see if you were in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th row, since it was not an elevated runway. Also, we are not sure why press was not accommodated with better seating arrangements. It is a shame when the model’s families and friend’s get better seats then magazines covering the show. Grant it the models are very important to the show, it is not about the models it is about the garments they are wearing. This did not happen for every show, but some of the audience members were cheering during shows when certain models came out. Can you say inappropriate fashion week behavior? It was probably the open bar that got to them.

The good news is for some shows we were able to get a better seating without any problems by asking the coordinator. We were very thankful for that.

Although there were plenty of stumbles and the memorable wardrobe malfunction, the walks of the collections were a success. The lighting was great, the separation of the lounge from the runway area was great, and we loved checking out the buyers’ market downstairs. We had fun, and enjoyed the various collections by the different designers. We were able to celebrate the end of Fashion Week with a wrap party at the Eiffel Society, where we were able to personally congratulate the designers on their fantastic collections.

Overall, the biggest complaint is that it seemed like this season the point was missed. Fashion Week is
about fashion, and this seemed to be more geared towards entertainment.

The cheering crowd and the open admission caused New Orleans Fashion Week to lose some of its credibility and professional style. Fashion Week's runway shows are partly an art exhibit, but mainly a business transaction documented by the media. They should have remained exclusive to buyers, media, bloggers, and sponsors. If you are serious about developing a fashion industry in New Orleans you have to prove it. If you want to just provide entertainment, admit it.

Artsy Crafty Nails

The DIY nails is becoming ever more popular these days and for good reason. Its cheap, easy, and gives you something to do when you are bored. It also lets you express your creative side.

Here are some of my favorites:

1. Galactic nails- very simple, yet beautiful. Basically apply a dark coat, wait for it to dry, then paint the tips with a glittery nail polish. You can also add some little rhinestones to emphasize a nail or two.

2.Crackle Nails- Very simple, and interesting. Pick your colors and apply a regular color coat and wait for it to dry. Then a apply thin or thick layer, depends on the effect you want, of crackle nail polish, which you can find at basically any drugstore.

3. Newspaper nails- Still very easy and an attention getter. For this you need regular newspaper, rubbing alcohol, and a light base color. You apply a light base color, something that would be easy to see the print through. Cut a few pieces of newspaper that you can easily put on your nail. And pour the rubbing alcohol into something you can easily dip your finger in to cover your nail, like a short shot glass. You apply the light color nail polish first, and wait for it to dry. After it drys, you dip your finger in the rubbing alcohol and immediately stick a piece of newspaper on your nail. It doesn't take very long for the print to get on your nail, max 30 secs.

4. Water Marble nails- This is the most time consuming and messiest, but well worth it in the end. You will need: a bowl or cup you can easily dip your finger into filled with warm or room temperature water, toothpicks or orange sticks, and polishes you think will work well together. Let a big drop of nail polish fall into the water, followed by the other colors. Once you have all the colors you want, get the toothpick(or orangestick) and drag through the polish from the outside to the middle until you make a pretty design. Dip your finger in the water making sure it is completely under. You can use the toothpick/orange stick to get the remaining polish onto your nail. Repeat for every nail. You can use tape or vaseline to protect the rest of your finger from becoming covered with nail polish, or you can just use nail polish remover.

For all of these I recommend first applying a clear base coat, and when you are finished apply a clear topcoat.

Event Review: Respect my Swag Fashion Show

Let me first say, this fashion show really exceeded my expetations. The models were beautiful. They came in all different shapes, sizes, and ethnicities. And, their swagger was amazing, definitely worthy of respect.

This event was held at Nicholls State University and put together by the Nicholls chapter of the NAACP and was sponsored by radio station Q93.3. The proceeds for this show went to Habitat for Humanity and the NAACP scholarship.

Did I mention that this wasn't your typical fashion show? When we entered, we were asked to buy a raffle ticket for a liquor basket. Yes, Please! Of course we will! Trey White and Niki from Q93 hosted the event, which honestly made me fall in love with Niki. She was a great, fun host.

All night, Niki and Trey White raffled off prizes. The most memorable was when they called up three people to dance-off for the secret prize. First, it was who can "dougie" the best. Then there were two. Bounce-off! They both really wanted that secret prize. The guy was busting out his best moves, and the girl was hut-hutin' for her life! There is only one way to win a bounce competition: backing it up like there is no tomorrow! Of course, she won. The poor girl lost her earring she was working it so hard.

In between, and sometimes, during walks there were live musical performances. Yes, I said during, and I should add in the middle of the runway mingling with the models. There was a lot of local musical talent from rappers (like Papi Dio and Scooter) to a boy band (Image Music) who sang great a Capella. The models came out one by one displaying fashion from local stores, local designers, and even students. Most of the styles and outfits featured were both cute and wearable or sexy and fun. The models confidently struck a pose and walked the runway with their individual swagger. They didn't walk slow and stiff, but with style and attitude. They would sometimes give each other high-fives or act out something like "boy chases girl, girl says get lost," while on the run-way. Each model had a unique look. Everywhere from thin and tall to curvaceous. I loved this! It was literally every healthy body type there is in one show. I saw long legs, sexy thick legs, hour- glass, apple bottom, etc. They all had something about them, even the men, that made them beautiful. Which fits perfectly with the title of the show, "Respect my Swag."

I was very impressed with this event. I feel it goes with what we here at the Wearhouse District love: confidence, good causes, liquor baskets... and oh, yes! bounce. PLUS it was at a school which only makes it better.

During the intermission, there were various booths set up for the different designers, stores, and charities/ organizations. Over 200 people came, and the event raised more than $1100.

Fall Trends 2011 (part 3)

“What’s your fetish?” Leather. Whips. Chains. Chokers. Spikes.

So, the major theme we saw in the Spring 2011 season was definitely the 1970’s. Somehow this era’s sexuality transferred over into fall. A lot of accents and accessories we will see throughout the season will be inspired by fetishes. Think Leather, whips, chains, chokers and spikes. The key to wearing this trend and still being stylish, rather than obscene, is to focus of subtlety. You want to look sexy, yes, but not like you are attending a costume party. Simply representing this trend by wearing a spiked heel and sexy choker can go a very long way. And, this theme works amazing with all other trends for Fall 2011. Just imagine a faux fur coat or lacey top with those spiked heels… mmm. Delish!

Men and Makeup

Men are starting to feel more comfortable with the idea of wearing makeup. No, I don’t mean “guy-liner.” Men wearing eye liner is old news, and it really doesn’t do more than make guys look like they’re trying too hard to be cool or edgy.

The use of cosmetics like concealer, powder, and bronzer is becoming more common among the modern day man. Obviously, this is a result of men embracing the importance of grooming. But, unlike the guys who wore makeup in the past to be campy and throw out gender rules, the guys of today keep their looks natural and clean. They look at makeup as their best kept secret, not a source of vibrant expression.

A cream or mousse concealer is the perfect way to hide spots and blemishes. A fine oil-absorbing powder (like L'Oreal’s Translucide) can help even skin tones and take away excessive shine. Bronzer isn’t for every guy, but if used correctly (sparingly and not covering your whole face), it can really enhance a man’s look and add color to his skin.

If you are a guy who is open to wearing makeup to hide blemishes or help give your face a cleaner, fresher look, you can definitely try some of these products next time you take a trip to the drugstore.

Fall Trends 2011 (Part 2)

“Fur Real! ...not necessarily real fur.” Fur. Chainmail and Metal.

Fur will be everywhere this Fall, and I mean everywhere! I have even seen fur accents on a pair of pumps. Fur can be so beautiful and the warmth it brings to our outfits is unbeatable. But, I’m sure many of you, like myself, are iffy about wearing real fur. I assure you fake fur can be just as comfortable, stylish, and warm as the real thing – and it’s even a little less barbaric too.

Metal is showing up quite often in many Fall trends. Chainmail and gold or silver links are not just being used for accessories but garments as well. This is a great way to add something unique to an outfit, but make sure you layer underneath because during cool weather the last thing you want is freezing metal against your bare skin. Yikes!

Fashion Phenomenon or Sheer Laziness?

“Every single time I see a girl wearing Track Shorts and a T-shirt I’m clapping!”

That is the infamous quote yelled into the night’s sky by one of my best mates. Granted our group was headed to a local diner for some post clubbing/drinking grub on a Saturday night. With the more than standard amount of girls in track shorts and tees out that night, it was a more than necessary comment. And, believe me, we’ve been clapping ever since.

Introduction

I first remember noticing this trend in college a few years back. Chilling in the quad, I would see one, maybe two girls dressed in Nike track shorts combined with a tee, sneakers or flip flops. I simply saw them as girls who choose to workout in between class. Once winter rolled around, they would add tights, UGGs, and a North Face pull over to the mix. An easy, carefree outfit that was also functional enough for one’s daily school regime.

Growth

Now, this style (or lack thereof) is no longer reserved for hectic school days. It crossed ethnicities, age and weight groups. You can find grandmothers to grade school girls sporting this dress style. They pair the track shorts with hoodies, button-downs, polo shirts, tank tops, sweatshirts, sandals, TOMS… and my absolute fave: Sperry boat shoes with socks!

Although this trend spread like HPV in a college dorm, the majority of the girls wearing this style of dress do not practice better cardio habits on a consistent basis and have no intentions on doing so. If that were the case, then Louisiana wouldn’t be rated as #5 state in obesity.

Maturity

How unoriginal can one want to be? I can understand that you may have many tasks throughout the day and need comfort. But purchasing seven different colors of track shorts (they average between $18 - $40) to wear seven days out of the week is utter laziness. You’re basically opting out of utilizing the right side of your brain to be just a bit creative with your daily wear. You would prefer to put on a pair of shorts that you wore the day before, perhaps a different Greek event tee and your favorite Sperry’s. Why? Because, everyone else is doing it. Therefore, it’s acceptable.

Decline?

Anyhow, I’m not going to get into the power of fads and how the majority of the population are typically followers…. blah blah. I’ll just sit back and keep hope alive that this trend (along with reality TV) will someday come to an end. But in the meanwhile, let’s all join in and give these girls a hand!

Know Your Bloggers: Tokyo Rose

Tokyo Rose, a fellow New Orleans native, stands out among the crowd of other bloggers and online boutique owners because of her fun, young, and sexy style.

When asked to describe her style, the lovely Tokyo Rose said, "My style is really all over the place. Sometimes I'm dressed straight '60s long dress, pearls and oxfords then I have my grunge look with the ripped up Levis and Dr. Martens. So I really don't have a style... I like what I like."

She runs one of the most stylish online boutiques on the web. "Tokyorosedesigns.com is a site I started as a freshmen in college. I've always wanted a boutique, but being in school it's kind of hard to a manage a store. So, I decided to go for an online store." Tokyo Rose is currently in school for Fashion Design, and working on a T-shirt line.

Fall Trends 2011 (part 1)

“Rich!” Glitz and glamour. Sequins. Lace. Gems.

When it comes to color for this Fall season, think deep gemstone hues. The “Rich” trend is all the rage right now. Being extravagant and wearing true, bold colors will be the only way to make it through the fall in style. So, put away the electric green and hot pink wardrobe that clanged to you all during the summer, and reach for some ruby, sapphire, and emerald items.

Also, to add more of a rich flash to your closet, start stocking up on a lot of fine lace and sequins. I’m sure many of you fashion fanatics have seen Prada do oversized sequins right with the amazing pailette dresses. If that doesn’t scream Fall fashion 2011 I don’t know what will. So, if you want to be on top of your fashion come Fall make sure you are drenched in gems, lace and sequins. And, make sure every day you are dressed like the true royalty you are.

Know Your Bloggers: Kate Schneider

Kate Schneider's blog, No Pants Tuesday, is one of the sites I visit to get my daily dose of style. Schneider's fashion sense is outstanding! She can put together an outfit like no other blogger can.

"Ok, I guess I would describe my style as feel-good. I like to wear clothes that make me smile, and I have a penchant for bright colors and sharp cuts. As my style evolves, I see myself moving towards more grown up silhouettes and classic designs.

"I started no pants tuesday mostly to have a personal record of my style, but since then I have found blogging to be incredibly rewarding. What really keeps me at it is the people I've met within the blogging community, other bloggers who are great people and inspiring writers/stylists/photographers/etc.

"Fashion plans for the future? Basically, I'll keep doing what I'm doing, though I would love to partner with some designers or start my own line at some point. But that's probably every fashion blogger's dream, so I'm not going to put all my eggs in the 'I'm moving to New York and getting famous' basket."

I love my city of New Orleans, the city by the lake ,the theatrical characters that roam downtown, the vibrant colors of the souls that roam here; attached to their capsules or not. The city is mine and I belong to the city. My New Orleans is full of different women.;Women who earn what they receive, women who just sit there and look pretty to have everything handed to them, "Bad bitches" who actually use their parents money for everything, and then we have our real bad bitches who bust their asses day and night. Coming from a working class family, earning what I want is all I know. If I don't work, I don't pay my phone bill, car insurance or get my pair of Jordan's I've been DYING to get. We save up all of our money to take that one day off of work and ravage Magazine Street with their thrift,vintage and beautiful Victorian inspired boutiques. We all know the worth of a hard day's pay so we choose our clothes carefully. If it ain't cute, we ain't buyin' it.

So, yesterday I was walking uptown and saw this young lady in front of me. She had a jean jacket, zebra leggings. (YES,ZEBRA LEGGINGS)red heels, blue polish and curly black hair. I observe the hell out of people in life. I am like Hannibal Lector except I don't devour people physically but mentally with a side of fava beans and a nice Chianti. Anyway, I was walking uptown and overheard her talking on the phone with someone to pick up her child. To me, if you can raise a child and look as hot as her, you are one BAD BITCH and you deserve a reward. So, girl off of St. Charles, if you read this somehow; God Bless you and your zebra leggings and red heels. I mean, I had a mental hard on the entire time. I couldn't help myself.

To me style is a statement not only seen but heard through out my city. It can be seen through our little uptown kids wearing their expensive Urban Outfitters, American Apparel and boutiques clothing. It can be heard through the single mother at the doctor's talking her head off about empire dreams, California fantasies and big goals of being the next Nicki Minaj or the Rachel Zoe of New Orleans. These are the girls who will always inspire me. Even if, one day, I'm made of millions,I will ALWAYS remember these girls who never gave up on themselves. The girls who bust their behinds 40 hours a week, and still manage to stay in school. This is for the girls with babies, and the father is a worthless scumbag who plays "Rick Ross" on Facebook. Who still manage to get their nails done, hair done and feed their inner creative soul. Behind every girl is a story of hard times, late night shifts and half way heart breaks. Underneath the African print leggings, retro sun glasses and glittered heels are women who wouldn't let their hard times get in the way of their inner queen. The world couldn't bring us down because we march to our own beat which is in one rhythm; New Orleans.

Great Ideas: The Good Samaritan Thrift Store

I’m definitely a huge fan of thrift and vintage shopping. Most of the crazy, one-of-kind pieces I have in my wardrobe are from a fantastic little place called Good Samaritan Thrift Store. It’s located in Raceland, Louisiana, a small town about 30 miles outside of New Orleans. It’s surprising how many fantastic vintage pieces I have found at this little shop, like Oscar De La Renta and Christian Dior ties from the 70’s, one of a kind patterned blazers, and colorful tops from the 60’s.

Not only is this thrift store great for the fashion, but it also has the best prices. I have gone into the shop with five dollars and left with a sack of clothes! And you can feel great about spending every cent because all proceeds go to the Good Samaritan food bank connected to the thrift store.

Every experience I’ve had with Good Samaritan Thrift Store and Food Bank has been extraordinary. I not only recommend adding some of this store’s awesome vintage items to your wardrobe, I also recommend donating your used apparel to them. You should never throw out old garments that are in good condition. It’s always better to recycle when possible. And, giving your clothing to a non-profit group is not only green but its considerate. There are far too many people that go without clean, comfortable clothing.

Jergens: Natural Glow

I am already tan, but my tan was lacking something. I wasn't glowing. So I bought Jergens Natural Glow; and wasn't really sure what to expect.

I have been using this stuff for about two weeks. I could tell there was a little difference, but I didn't think it was that big of a deal. Yesterday, my boyfriend told me, "Wow! your skin looks so good!" He continued with a bunch of great adjectives like "sexy," "beautiful," "young." That is all I needed to hear. Obviously, this stuff is working. It gives me that subtle glow that I wanted. Just use it as a daily moisturizer. I put it on at night after I take a shower, to lock in all that moisture. My skin feels great, too. Let me just warn you that I wasn't looking to get darker; I just wanted my tan to look better. So, basically, I recommend this product if you just want your skin to be slightly more beautiful than it is right now. That is exactly what happens.

Men’s Facial Routine

Most men think they are exempted from following a beauty regimen. This is crazy! Men need to have a daily routine just as much as women do. There are only a few tweaks needed to be made to a usually routine to make in tough enough for a man.

Guys, remember the basics of cleanse, tone, and moisturize can go a really long way. And, since you will most likely be in the sun a lot… being the manly man that you are, make sure that your moisturizer has a high SPF.

One of the main differences between a woman’s beauty regimen and a man’s is that a man has the option to shave or grow facial hair. If you decide to grow facial hair, make sure you trim and maintain it daily. And, even if you have been shaving your face for years now, you may still not know the proper way to go about it. Trimming with an electric razor is fantastic, but using a blade razor will most likely give you a closer shave.

Before starting a razor shave, make sure you soften your whiskers by applying a warm, damp wash cloth, and don’t be afraid to exfoliate dead skin and dirt away to insure a closer shave. Next, apply your shaving cream or shave gel evenly. Try not to use too much, and rub upwards to make the hairs stand tall. Or, you can even go an extra step and buy a shaving brush!

Remember when shaving to try to shave in the same direction as your hair grows, not against it – this can cause major irritation. Also, pulling your skin taut will decrease the chances of nicks. Make sure that you are cleaning your blades throughout the process to keep your shave as close as possible.

If you shave daily make sure you are inserting into your routine between cleansing and toning, because toning (with a alcohol-free toner) and moisturizing after a shave will decrease the appearance of razor bumps!

Event Review: Fashion Week Preview Party (New Orleans, LA)

The fashion week preview party hosted by NLE, Nicholas Landry Events was held at a great location called the Eiffel Society on St. Charles Ave in the lovely Garden District of New Orleans on Saturday August 27, 2011.

It was a nice touch to arrive and to not have to worry about parking with the provided complimentary valet. Inside this fantastic building was a really great atmosphere with great decor and music. DJ Beat Grrl opened up the night, but the party felt like it really got started when Baby Bee began to play live. As they performed, you could see the silhouette of the models getting ready backstage, which was a great idea. My only complaint is that they started the preview during Baby Bee's performance, instead of making the preview the center of attention or the main event; it was off to the side. Also, unfortunately, they did not announce the designers or anything about the preview; they projected their names.

The designers for this season's Fashion Week are Matthew Arthur, Jolie and Elizabeth, Amanda deLeon, Blackout, Varela and Brooks, and Rogersliu. Some of the designs I was not too impressed with which makes me hope that the designers have better to offer for the show. But on the other hand, some of the designs were absolutely fantastic! They were original, eye-catching, and beautiful. It is good to see some familiar talent and it is exciting to see some new designers arriving to the scene. From this preview, I think we have a lot to look forward to from our local designers for NOLA Fashion Week (October 15-21,2011).

After the preview, the party continued and the guests danced the night away with awesome music from DJ Lemonhead. I don't drink; but, according to Dalton the drinks from Dallas Ray, Eiffel's mixologist, were absolutely incredible. The only complaint for this is the bar was packed and it was nearly impossible to get another fabulous drink, so we actually gave up and continued to dance. Apparently though, people were getting drinks because by the end of the night the other guest started getting messy. When we decided to leave, it was not a problem because the valet promptly got my car back to me. Let me mention he was listening to Bounce; I thought that was great. Overall it was a good experience. I am definitely looking forward to NOLA Fashion Week (October 15-21, 2011).

Dressed to Learn

Is it safe to assume that when we dress to impress, we impress our teachers? My first year of college I had a business professor that assured his students he would not take them seriously unless they were properly attired in class. It was a lesson that stuck with me, but few others.

I have seen people attend class in sleepwear and gym clothes, and once a guy showed up to class shirtless. Not only is this disrespectful to your teachers and fellow classmates, but it can really damage your image. Wearing track shorts during the summer and pajama bottoms during the winter may be comfortable, but it is so unimpressive. When I see students wearing these items to class I just think they look lazy and sloppy. This is not how you want to be seen, especially in school.

Interview: Jordy Marilyn

8:05 pm was my arrival time at the Gallery Bohemia (Baton Rouge, LA). Once I walked in, I discovered a mixture of bright lights, good music, unique lounge décor and loads of fascinating artwork created by some of our finest local artists.

Art lovers and shoppers alike were plentiful. Some made purchases and others simply came to socialize. But through the mist of it all, there was only one figure that caught my eye. Dressed in torn tights and one of his showcase pieces, it was the spotlight artist of the night Jordy Marilyn enlightening some of his new followers with conversation.

This was Jordy’s second showing of his Marilyn Manor tees at the Gallery Bohemia. Not only did the tees sell out at the first showing, but also Jordy had no choice but to create an order list for new fans in between showings.

Once Jordy Marilyn gotten a free moment from photos and chatting up potential clients, I was able to get in a little Q & A:

So Jordy what’s the name of your collection and what’s its representation?

It’s called The Baptism Collection. It represents the three fabrics that saved my life: leather, leopard and lace. I call it the Baptism Collection because much like a biblical baptism they represent a new beginning and the production of these tees is never-ending, which also mirrors the definition of baptism.

So how did the name Marilyn Manor come about?

I chose the name Marilyn Manor because there have only been two iconic Marilyns that I acknowledge. That’s Marilyn Monroe and Marilyn Manson. And then the term manor came from the fact that a lot of corporations in the fashion industry and fashion labels have “house” in them and I wanted to set myself apart from contemporary. So I decided to call it manor, instead of house…. Manors are bigger than houses and I can house a lot more for the rejects of fashion… people that are misfits. I can house more and make it an institution…a “manor” and it’s perfect because it’s two “m’s”…. (Jordy gets up to have a drink, a cig and catches up with a friend. And then, he makes his way back….)

This is your intro. So what’s next for Jordy Marilyn and Marilyn Manor?

This is a segway, a beginning of what I’m about to do in the fashion world…what I’m about to do in the art world. It’s the start of what’s to come. The second installment I’m gonna do is right after the Baptism in that which never ends. The Baptism collection is made up of t-shirts that I will never stop producing. I want it to be ever growing and never-ending. So the second installation is what comes after that. Next I have a fashion show that I’m planning for in September in co- production with Kelly (Bohemia’s owner) and Gallery Bohemia. And I also plan on scaring the shit out of everybody in Louisiana with what I put on!

Be on the look out world. Jordy Marilyn is ready to take it over.

Event Review: Shop Out CF (New Orleans, LA)

The event took place at a fabulous shop on the famous Magazine Street of New Orleans called Vernon. The room was filled with very stylish, super cute people shopping, conversing and having a good time.

The drinks and Hors d'œuvres provided by LRG were fantastic! Very delicious cookies and very juicy, sweet watermelon. Everyone seemed to have a drink in hand, and there is no better way to shop out CF than that I am sure! They played super awesome music. Grace Rose, the eight year old girl hosting the event sang a song for us, which was super cute. That takes guts! You go girl! After that she and few friends sang songs together and it was just a good time. I was very happy to see such a great event thrown to help cure Cystic Fibrosis. Congratulations to all the designers, participants, and shoppers that truly is a good cause.

DIY: Aspirin Facial Mask

Facial masks are so much fun, especially when you get to make it yourself! This DIY project will keep your skin radiant and healthy, so give it a try. All you need is a bottle of non-coated aspirin, a lemon and some honey.

First, place a little less than a handful of the aspirin in a bowl. And then, take the lemon and cut it in half. Squeeze one of the lemon halves into the bowl, and watch as the aspirin absorb the lemon juice. When the non-coated aspirin has absorbed all the juice, they should be very soft and easy to smash. If they are not, add more lemon juice or try adding water. Now, it’s time to add the honey. Take about two tablespoons of honey, add it to the aspirin, and then mix all the ingredients together. Viola! Now, you can apply your mask. Wait ten or fifteen minutes after applying, the mixture should set up and harden. And then, you can wash it off with warm water. Your skin will be glowing and super soft!

The aspirin is an exfoliant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. The slightly coarse texture of the crushed aspirin helps exfoliate and remove dead skin cells. It also cleans pores, and reduces redness of existing acne. The lemon juice helps kill bacteria and chemically exfoliates. And, the honey keeps your skin moisturized and smooth so there are no harsh effects on your skin will using your mask.

The Tom's Trend

I have noticed that everyone pretty much seems to own a pair of Toms. They have the "One for One" slogan for every pair of shoes you buy they give a free one to someone in need. Without shoes a person is more susceptible to getting cuts and sores on their feet, which is not just painful; it can lead to disease. Toms has made a promise that with each purchase of a shoe there will be a shoe given to someone who needs shoes. How can you say "no" to them?

It is about $40 dollars (give or take) to buy a pair, which is an average price for really good shoes (they are super comfortable), and if you think about it you are buying a pair for someone else. So when you purchase a pair of Toms you don't have to feel guilty, this was a selfless purchase. Don't be fooled by imposters. You provided children with shoes they fit in, because they give shoes to the same children as they grow. This means they can go to school and learn and help themselves one day. So no need to feel guilty about following this trend, or is there?

What about the families that made a living from selling shoes? They cannot compare with free Toms. Are we ruining nations' economies by buying Toms shoes? There are children who are still starving, but they have shoes. It is really hard to know what is right or what is true. In my head, everyone deserves a great pair of shoes. So I have no problem spending a little extra knowing someone is going to get a pair too. I am sure there really are children and adults who really need some shoes, and that it enhances life a little by owning Toms. But, if we really are ruining nations it makes me second guess it.
However, I may still be tempted to buy a pair of Toms because I imagine a little child being so happy because they are getting this present from me! He may even discover his love for fashion because of these fashionable shoes.
It is cool that this became a trend. I think the intentions are good, but sometimes things we do have unintended negative consequences. But, we love feeling like we helped and made a difference in someone's life. It is our decision to make.

Product Review: Lasting Finish Pro

Nail polish can either be a disaster to apply of perfection. One of best polishes known for it's quality, colors and amazingly wide brushes is Rimmel London's Lasting Finish Pro Polish. That's right this amazing jewelry is made from plastic bottles. Originally from New Orleans, Denise Kountakis, the designer was inspired to make use of what to others is just garbage. She makes it beautiful. She gets her materials from home, friends, and from donations. All previously used to hold some sort of beverage. All of her jewelry is hand-made. She paints the plastic with a special imported paint, and then she delicately shapes the plastic to perfection. There is necklaces, earrings, head pieces, etc. Each piece is custom made. So, yes, I helped design each to just the way I wanted it. Pick the color, pick the jewels, pick if you want a leaf or flower, pick how many every detail if you want. It is truly amazing! She uses every part of the bottle even the caps and rings. This is very green. It gives me a good feeling wearing this jewelry knowing we made it from recycled material and no one knows it until I tell them. They are just complimenting me on how fabulous it looks! We all know how important a healthy diet is for our body. Healthy diets can help to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight and body mass index. They can gives us energy and keep our internal organs in great shape. But, did you know your skin should have it's own diet? New Orleans and its Many Stylish Districts

Those of us familiar with New Orleans and its many different districts know each district is home to its own sub-culture. A lot of clubs, bars, and restaurants collected in one district share the same theme or atmosphere and are visited by the same types of people. So, it’s only natural for each district to have its own style when it comes to fashion.

The Garden District and Uptown New Orleans are home to many young people and hip areas like Oak Street or Magazine Street – most likely a result from major universities like Loyola and Tulane being in this area. But, for the most part, the Garden District is known for the pricey St. Charles Avenue homes, upscale dining, and posh bars. So a lot of the fashion in the Garden District is very preppy. If one would want to blend into the crowd, just break out some Ralph Lauren polo shirts and khaki pants. You can also go a step further and even add a cashmere sweater to wrap around your shoulders. It’s obviously too hot outside to wear during the summer, but nothing says preppy more than cashmere.

If you were to jump on the streetcar and work your way down the city, next on our stop would be the Warehouse District (Also known to some as the Art District for its many art galleries and Ogden Museum). This district is probably best known for its night clubs. This is where you will find clubs like Republic or Metropolitan, and lounges and bars like Fino or Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar. Most of the style in the Warehouse District is conquered by edgy, urban fashion. Some can even be labeled as grungy, and is probably influenced by the unique art scene. Simply take an oxford shirt, cover it with a button-down vest and add boot cut jeans or casual slacks. And, you will basically become a Warehouse/Art District frequent. Add some accessories from stores like Guess? or Buckle and you are set.

After the Warehouse District, comes the Central Business District (CBD). The CBD is pretty self-explanatory. It is the district that houses office buildings and business people. After leaving modern apartment buildings like Poydras 930 and heading to work, most natives like to de-stress at rather sophisticated restaurants and lounges (others rather have some fun at high-energy clubs like Ampersand). A lot of the lounges in the CBD have dress codes, so it goes without saying that the attire most common in this district is classy and a little dressier than others. Think sexy business casual. Break out your ties and sport coats and you are ready for an elegant night. Ladies, this is the best district to wear elaborate heels like Blahnik’s or Choo’s.

Next stop would be the well-known French Quarter. After night falls everyone flocks to the Quarter’s favorite street of sin, Bourbon Street. It’s important when bar hopping on Bourbon Street to dress the part. Girls, hike up those mini skirts and show some leg. It’s safe to say the French Quarter is where you will find a very casual style. The trend on Bourbon Street is less is more and skin is in.

Last on our fashion journey is Faubourg Marigny. Marigny is by far the best place for Jazz fans and dive bar lovers. That is maybe why there are so many bohemian outfits that walk down Marigny’s Frenchman Street. And, you can definitely find some trendy hipsters at places like Mimi’s and Maison. Think maxi dresses or long skirts for the gals, and V-neck T-shirts and skinny jeans for the gentlemen. Tie it all up with vintage accessories and a spring scarf and you’ll look like you could have 13 Monaghan’s menu memorized.

Now, your wardrobe can be on point and ready for any part of the city! Share your new found New Orleans fashion tips with your friends, plan a night out or a shopping trip in your favorite district, and show off your fantastic style.

Skin Tips for Party Animals

I don't know about you, but my skin takes a beating when I spend a night out. Many of you are probably well aware of the damage drinking alcohol does to your skin. Sure, it's hard to pass up a Woo Woo cocktail when you're out on the town. But, that one drink can leave your skin dehydrated and ready to crack. Imagine what several cocktails do!

The same effects are seen from cigarette smoke as well. Even I f you are not a smoker, being in a bar where you skin takes it in second hand can do damage to your pores and even quicken wrinkle visibility.

The lack of sleep during our long nights out also play a big role in damaging our skin as well, especially our eyes. "And I think we all know, there are certain dark circles even the cleverest make-up can't cover.," (says Samantha Jones from Sex and the City).

There is hope my Bourbon Street Brats and Uptown socialites! You can still go hard all night and retain your beautiful skin. All you need to do is exfoliate regularly and moisturize daily.

Exfoliating is important because it gets rid of dead skin cells and loose dirt. Try to do it twice a week. Apricot scrubs are great but can be too harsh on some skin types. If you are looking for an alternative, try enzyme masks and scrubs. They are very soft on your skin and work just as well as the manual scrubs. Also, if you break out a lot or suffer from severe acne, try to stay away from scrubs and exfoliate chemically with fresh grapefruit or lemon juice.

Moisturizing daily is a must after a night out. But, if you are afraid of clogging your pores try toning before you moisturize to shrink and tighten facial pores, and make sure your moisturizer is made specifically for your face. If you are willing to spend the money, Clinique's Pore Perfection is the best. And, I love the Breath of Fresh Air toner from Lush Cosmetics, but I have also used simple toners from CVS like L'Oreal's Hydra Fresh toner. As long as you make sure the toner is alcohol free you should be fine.

Estee Lauder's Re-Nutriv eye cream will do wonders on your dark circles, but at a very high cost. 100 bucks! You can honestly get close to the same results from a simple daily facial moisturizer. I've had awesome results from many of Aveeno's moisturizers, like Positively Smooth. You can even try applying slices of cucumber. Cliche, maybe. But, hey, it works.

There is a definite illusion that straight men couldn't care less about fashion and the way they look. Wrong.

I have been talking to a few of my guy friends about fashion lately to get their opinions. My boyfriend and a few of his friends browsed through a couple of GQ magazines with me. Surprisingly, they completely enjoyed it. They made comments about the models and what they were wearing, and come to find out they are not blind! They can totally pick out what looks good. Sometimes I think they are completely unaware of their own capabilities to be fashionable.

So what's stopping them? Why don't they?
I asked my friends, after they had a few beers, Britton Frost, Dustin Eagan, Cody Peltier, and Robert Moon just that. Their Answer:
They wear clothes they have; they don't go out of their way to get rid of clothes they have and especially don't want to get new ones. They hang on to their clothes until they literally can't wear it anymore. I find that most guys don't shop for themselves. They don't feel like putting the time or effort into shopping. Plus, guy's clothes are generally more expensive than girl's clothing. I talked to mostly the college age group of straight guys so if they did have money to shop they feel like they don't really want to spend it on clothes. They would rather spend their money on something that is more significant to them, whatever that may be. When they finally do go shopping they know before hand exactly what they are looking for so it is just a matter of finding the right size.

When it comes time to actually putting effort into looking nice, guys generally feel lost at picking the right clothes to wear. They go by what they think will be appropriate for the occasion. When they think of being fashionable, they automatically think "business suit." It's like they all want to be James Bond. Imagining themselves in a suit is how they see themselves as being cleaned up. It is ultimate class.
When it comes to expressing individual style Dustin Eagan (of Arguing Semantics and SIGHTINSOUND) and Britton Frost (of Guns of the Seneca) said something along these lines, "Its not the clothes you wear. It's that Old Spice. Swagger. That's how I express my style." Unfortunately, the culture we live in, which is South Louisiana, doesn't really promote fashion especially in men. So if everyone around doesn't care about fashion why start? They care more about being comfortable and the accessibility and versatility of their clothes.

But the thing is: They just want to wear suits so badly! They want to pull off those killer shades. Wear those awesome kicks. They want to look badass! So Just go ahead and do it. The models for this post own the clothes featured, so it's not hopeless. Of course, I am generalizing based off a group of my close straight guy friends. Surely, it is undeniable the clothes you wear, the style you present makes a difference.

My life is crazy. It always has been. And, I hope it continues to be interesting as I continue making everyday count. These are some of the things that may show up on my bucket list…

• Visit all 50 United States and buy a fashion piece from each as a souvenir
• Write a novel that is so awesome that it gets adapted into a film or sitcom or cartoon… or all three
• Own my own PR firm and worldwide non-profit organization
• I’ve seen them in every pet store, but I can’t imagine them in the wild… So I would love to see wild hamsters… Do those even exist?!
• Be in a random event spread in a national magazine at some fantastic party with beautiful celebrities at my side.
• Live in New York City for at least 10 years
• Own a priceless work of art
• Live out of the country for at least one year
• Beat the world record for largest gathering of people in there undies (116 people in London gathered for Fair Trade’s “Pants to Poverty” cause at St. Pancras rail station) by throwing the biggest panty party ever for “Shirts Off” non-profit in New Orleans.

There are so many things I want to do before I die. I want to travel a lot and see exotic lands and experience as many different cultures as possible. I want to have a brilliant, successful career doing something I love. I want to be able to say I helped millions of people, and do it on a daily basis through philanthropy and volunteer work. Even though my life is pretty hectic now, and I know it will only continue to get busier as the years add up, I want to stay in touch with all my best friends no matter where we are in the world and in life. I hope that before I die I will be able to do something amazing to show how much my parents mean to me. Even though it will be near impossible, I want to repay them for everyday that have lifted me up and kept me going. I want to live a life so fun that it compares to no other. And, I want to make everyone in my life proud.

Modern day times are very fast paced. We are starting to sacrifice quality for quickness. This is true for both our food and our fashion. Many of us know that when we settle for fast food we are not getting sufficient nutrition, but this is also true for fast fashion. Sure, both that Big Mac and that XXI top are super cheap and may satisfy your craving for now. But, it’s very accurate when people say you get what you pay for. Before you know it you have to hit the gym to work off that burger, and find a new top because your fast fashion purchase is already unraveling at the seam.

Fast Fashion, like fast food, can be okay in moderation. It’s the easiest and cheapest way to stay stylish, and is made fast to keep up with current trends. But, maybe it’s time we take a minute, slow down and smell the Prada.

When I think about fashion,swag, and a sense of style, the first thing that stands out is someone's demeanor and personality. It's in the crazy dreams we express, the kind deeds we do when no one is watching, to the nights we swim with Claire's dog in her pool while drinking Dos Equis. Anybody can go to the mall, a boutique or a shoe store and buy a look but what you can't buy is what separates you from every other human being. And all of that is style it's self. Money can't buy you your signature in this world.

With love from Greece, Shanna runs like a wild zebra under the African sun and everything the light touches is hers . Her style is kickin' it with Ariel the mermaid while I fight off Ursula the fat crazy bitch (aka our non existent enemies) . This solstice princess and Venus queen's look is inspired of seashells by the seashore, summertime vibes , Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls. My opposite but complimenting me so well, the solstice to my Equinox and my very best friend. Shanna's swag isn't store brought, but handmade by the hands of Mama Trish and University City.

What inspires our style: our obsession with Native American culture, intricate patterns, designs, our inner spiritual animal (Lion and wolf), my deep sea obsession with outer-space, her deep sea obsession with the ocean and our desire to surround ourselves with amazing vibes and fly to Saturn on pirate ships. I feel like my fashion sense is very unique. When I was younger, the first designer I began to notice was Hugo Boss (who is still one of my favorites). At that time, fashion wasn't a huge passion for me, but something about the clean-cut look in the Hugo Boss ads spoke to me. When I envisioned myself as an adult with a fantastic career, I saw me dressing in designer styles. I guess that was the spark that started the fire, because soon I was diving deeper. I wanted more… Dolce and Gabbana, and then Armani, and then Cavalli…

My knowledge of fashion designers and fashion houses has definitely grown over the years and my taste has evolved. My fashion sense is now very eclectic and ever-changing. One day I may want to be very posh, the next punk… and during the weekend why not throw in some wild western style. It's all about self-expression for me. So, it’s hard to stick with one style or label as my favorite.

I love to have fun in anything Jeremy Scott. He is a mad genius! Same goes for Betsey Johnson. Her brand is very fun. I love to dress up in Prada, a fashion gift from the gods. And, it’s great to keep it classic and classy in Calvin Klein. I’m also a huge fan of Ben Sherman, and I love Fred Perry bags.

But, even though I study fashion trends and follow certain fashion houses, I never buy anything just because of the label. Like I always say when filling my wardrobe: If it looks good I’ll wear it, and if it makes me feel good I’ll love it…

Great Ideas: Cure-Couture

As i was traveling to Austin, I stopped in Houston to visit family and friends. As I was there I actually saw something great on the news!

Cure-Couture is the name. They are all about helping women feel better about themselves when they need it most. Anyone who has ever been to the hospital knows that it is not the funnest place to be. When fighting illness, like maybe cancer, I would imagine that fashion is the farthest thing from mind. But, I have studied psychology enough to know that self-esteem can really improve health.
Their gowns add color when everything else is grey. These gowns help women feel like they aren't just another patient. Check out their website to find out more about them; I provided a link below.

Not many people know that you can bring your own gown to wear at the hospital. They have different gowns to fit different needs "Fashionable and Functional." So if you are going to hospital for anything, even if it is just for a day, you can be cuter than anyone there. Mannequin Disaster!

I've witnessed many frights in my life. I’ve had times where I thought my skin would be taken over by goosebumps, or where my spine would become frostbitten from an intense chill running down it. I’ve battled demons and danced with ghosts. But, no amount of terror could ever prepare me for this.
Yes, that is a mannequin displaying day-glow bra and matching boyshorts ON TOP of a black tank and black tights. This horrible sight was the only image that played in my mind for several days. And still it haunts me. Why would someone want to create such a hideous monster? What kind of vile human decides to wreak such havoc?

I witnessed this monstrosity as I was visiting a friend at a mall in a small town in Louisiana about an hour drive from New Orleans. This wasn’t the first time this store had produced a disturbing mannequin. A few weeks before they had put this in the window:

My phone wasn’t able to capture the best picture because of the lighting… and the fact that I could barely contain my laughter enough to keep my hand straight didn’t help much either. But, this dummy displays in all its shoe-less glory a B&W striped, ribbed tank top and some black leggings. It is accessorized with a light brown wicker purse and such sort of silicone watch. Can you say horrifyingly trashy!

Mannequins are supposed to draw customers into your store, and help suggest trendy items to your clients. They are not meant to have people running away in fear! The horror! Enter at your own risk! Move over ghouls and goblins. You have new competition for scariest sight in this town.

I hope I didn't give you nightmares… Muwahaha!

Product Review for the Impulsive Aquariuses

Do you feel like you've been sitting on Mercury and letting your beloved strands of hair fry under the sun !? Well, maybe not THAT severe; but I do ! Being an impulsive Aquarius, I like to change my scenery which means I like to change my hair colour...ALOT. Bleaching, manic panic dye, you know all of those lovely soul drenching hair dyes.

Well, I decided to go back to my naturals after dying it eight times. Literally eight times, alright.

My hair was falling out by just looking at it, my brushes had more hair then I had on my head. I was overly stressed because I have ovaries and my hair is a priority in my life. Then I found this heaven sent product.

I use this 3 times a week.All you need to do is let it sit in your hair for about five minutes and rinse with warm water while showering. It repaired my hair so much and my hair was just done for; I looked like the crypt keeper's grandma.

Event Review: Gaga Night (Baton Rouge, LA)

The event at Splash Club in Baton Rouge was called "Gaga Night", but it was far from it. At the beginning of the night before anyone was even there, they played Lady Gaga performances on the TV's located through out the club. Once people started showing up, they completely stopped playing Gaga. Excuse me, why call it "Gaga Night" if you aren't going to play Gaga ALL night? We were told that they didn't want people to get tired of listening and dancing to Gaga. HA!~ Like that would ever happen!
There were people who dressed up, glad to see that.
The performances made the club come alive, but it wasn't enough to make this night worth anything.
Congratulations to everyone who won the album from the album give away, I hope that made your night.

Product Review: CASTOR OIL HAIR TREATMENT

For some reason I've been on this kick for longer hair lately. But, I've been having trouble getting my hair to grow like I want it to. I have naturally thick hair and it's usually pretty unmanageable. I would have it thinned out and shaped like I wanted, become semi-happy with it, and then would have to trim a bunch off to get rid of dead ends. And I would start all over.

I started using Castor Oil Hair Treatment a couple months ago and I'm definitely satisfied with the results. Castor Oil promotes healthy hair growth, allowing me to grow out my hair and not worry about trimming dead or split ends. So, the growth process is a lot faster, and smoother. And, if you have thick hair, like me, or dry or frizzy hair Castor Oil helps keep it hydrated and manageable.

The downside I found is that the product can be really hard to wash out after applying, especially if you apply too much. It takes many shampoos to get all the hair treatment out. Also, many people complain about the Castor Oil causing bad acne outbreaks and itchy scalp. I actually had neither and I've been using the product religiously. Maybe it's the type of Castor Oil I used. But, I feel like if you shampoo your hair regularly (even though the hair treatment doesn't really wash out you can still keep your scalp clean) and perform a standard daily facial routine of cleansing, toning, and moisturizing you should be fine.

Music definitely inspires me. I couldn't go a day without music. There's something about dancing like a crazy person and singing along to my favorite songs that just keeps me going. Sometimes I get too tied up in work or school, but it's always nice to keep a level head and not take life too seriously.
