Past Kupcake Champion, Steve

On March 9, 2013 The Kupcake Factory held their 2nd annual Cupcake Eating Contest to benefit MDA’s Muscle Walk at the Zephyr Field. The cupcake eating contest participants were each provided 20 Kupcake Factory cupcakes and were only given 5 minutes to eat them! The first place winner, Estaban, received a t-shirt, two-dozen regular-sized cupcakes for their next birthday or celebration. The second place winner who was the reigning champ from last year, Steve, received a $15 Kupcake Factory gift card, and the third place winner received a t-shirt.

Steve, Estaban, Alexis and their family.
This year the tables turned when best friend Estaban stole the title from last year's Kupcake champion, Steve. He said, “If anyone were to beat me, I figured it would be him.” Steve and Estaban were both on the same team when it came to who they were supporting. Steve’s 5-year-old-daughter, Alexis, has muscular dystrophy, so the entire family came out to support her. This is Estaban's first time competing in the Kupcake challenge. "I figured, go big or go home."
That does not look appetizing.
This is what almost all of the contestants' plates looked like...a tad bit...unappetizing. Which was a big difference from the delicious Kupcake Factory cupcakes they started out as. There were 9 contestants this year, 8 of which pushed through. Sadly one ended up meeting the garbage can 4 cupcakes in...poor guy.

Ariyana Marcel and the VOODOO Couple.

As "Gangam Style" blared over the speakers, I couldn't help but notice this little girl dancing with the Voodoo Couple, so of course I had to meet her. Ariyana Marcel has spinal muscular atrophy, which is a disease that causes the muscles to damage and weaken. Her mother, Marylynne Marcel, said, "Having this type of support and cause means the world to us, knowing that we always have this kind of support system is what gets us through...they're family."

A little bit more about The Kupcake Factory and MDA:

The Kupcake Factory is locally owned and operated by 2 sisters, Victoria and Claudia Melgar. The Kupcake Factory opened in 2008, and now has 4 locations (Veterans, Old Metairie, Uptown, and Kenner). They have 30 original cupcake flavors all made from scratch with 12 different flavors offered daily. They wanted to support a good cause so they decided to get involved with MDA to raise awareness about muscular dystrophy and the association. Victoria said, "Our aunt has Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis which is a disease in the nerve cells, and she has had it for 8 years now so we wanted to contribute anyway we can, so we decided why not a cupcake eating contest, and we plan contributing for many years to come."

MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy. The association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education.
