Choosing the Right Fragrance

Choosing a new fragrance is not really an easy task, but here are a few tips that will assure you are picking the right scent.

TIP 1: LIST WHAT YOU LIKE
There are many different categories of smells. Floral, woodsy, fruity, aquatic, food inspired and many others. So, to help narrow down our choices it always helps to think about smells that we enjoy. Maybe you are a big fan of baking and enjoy the smell of cookies or cake. So, you would lean towards food inspired smells like a perfume with vanilla in it. Or, maybe you enjoy sailing and like the smells of the beach or ocean. You would look for a perfume or cologne with aquatic accents.

TIP 2: CHOOSE A SCENT FOR THE SEASON

Not every scent works well with all seasons. In fact, most perfumes and colognes only fit a single season. So, be aware of the season you are in or if a new season is fast approaching.

  • For the spring season, choose a floral scent for women (Jasmine, rose, etc.) and aromatic scents for men (Citrus, Lavender, etc.).
  • For summer, try fresh scents like green leaves or maritime notes.
  • For fall, always take advantage of the season with bold oriental scents like spices, vanilla or patchouli.
  • For winter, stick to woody scents like cedar, moss or other warm woods.
Try to choose four main scents to use year round, one for each season. Just be aware most Eau De Toilettes do not last as long as the more concentrated perfumes. So, they may lose their scent throughout the year. Try storing them in the refrigerator to save their strength.

STEP 3: CONSIDER YOUR PERSONALITY AND STYLE
One of the most important steps in choosing the perfect scent for you is to match the scent with your personality. Choose a smell that describes you. If you are flirtatious, go with a sexy bold scent to grab people’s attention. If you have a more cool, calm personality try something more smooth and subtle. If you have an edgy, bold style make sure that style translates to your fragrance. Never choose a fragrance because a celebrity you like endorses it, or you really like the packaging. Make sure it really describes who you are.

STEP 4: TRY A SCENT ON YOUR SKIN
We all have a natural smell and sometimes the fragrance we choose compliments that smell and other times it does not. It’s important to test the fragrance on our own skin before we purchase it. But, if you are at a fragrance counter in a department store and have many different scents to choose from, never try on more than one scent in the same spot. And, never try on more than two scents per visit. If you try on two many fragrances at a time you will not be able to receive the true smell of each perfume or cologne.

Happy perfume shopping!
